QUILTCON OR BUST

It's February! You know what that means! It's QuiltCon month!

Every year the modern quilting world gathers some of the best and brightest quilts, quilters, teachers, authors, and designers in one place for a few days to showcase modern quilting! This year, the CIA MQG will be represented in the Charity Quilt Challenge, and two member's, Jessie Zeigler and Eva Marie Evans, will show their work in the small quilts category! Additionally, our Vice President, Riane Menardi Morrison, will be introducing the MQG book that she coauthored.

The charity quilt was designed by CIA MQG member, Jessie Zeigler of Threaded Quilting Studio, with input from committee members including Marny Buck and Kristen Lee. Jessie reinterpreted the traditional pickle dish block to fit the MQG theme of Modern Traditionalism. The blocks were then splashed across an expanse of negative space to create an asymmetrical scattered layout. Finally, the 2018 MQG color palette was applied to add a spicy vibrant flavor to the once traditional pickle dish.

Construction of the quilt was truly a group effort. Marny astounded us all when she turned up with prepared kits, with all individual colors cut and prepared as they would be needed for the quilt blocks. The blocks were foundation pieced by individual guild members during a social sewing day, with extra effort made by Penny Ray and Julie Doy to complete all remaining blocks and remove the foundation papers. Marny then constructed the top from the finished blocks. Carol Noyes, custom quilted it adding the perfect variety and enthusiasm needed to balance the quilt. Meanwhile, Doris Brunnette prepared a multi-toned binding to mimic the color cascade seen in the quilt blocks. The quilt was then passed to Eva Marie Evans who hand stitched the binding, sleeve, and label before shipping the quilt to the MQG to be featured in QuiltCon magazine.

QuiltCon will be held in Pasadena, California this year between February 22nd and February 25th. Find more information, here.
